As part of a series of refurbishments and new build programmes PDP Architecture has been overseeing for Totton College in recent years, the College wanted to make better use of an existing entrance and courtyard area to provide a new public face for the college campus.
The solution was to enclose part of the courtyard with a lean-to building forming an atrium space connecting to the existing admin block. This created a large entrance space where the college reception greets students and visitors. An open plan admin area is accessed to the right whilst the rest of the atrium space can be flexibly used as exhibition space or meeting place for students.
The building brings the point of entry forwards so that it addresses the college car park with large signage above the entrance lobby pod. The structure has a sloping roof with the structure defined by ‘buttress’ features all brightly coloured in the college colours of lime green and grey.
A small external amphitheatre has been constructed in the courtyard facing the atrium to be used as an outdoor performance space and informal meeting/ seating space.
