pdp architecture llp designed a new two storey gym extension with central atrium and a double height play centre for Horizon Leisure Trust. Due to the step in levels across the site the new gym extension was designed with a double height atrium area which provided a central core to divide the existing and new gym areas into three main sections. These areas are made up of a cardio area, a weight lifting / toning area and a studio area for classes.

The new gym was located to the south of the proposals to take advantage of the natural daylight via a wall of glass, which was further over clad with vertical brise soleil to reduce any potential overheating. This has been a vast improvement on the previous windowless gym.

To the north of the proposals a double height play centre has been constructed and fitted out with a new three storey climbing frame complete with slides and ball pits.

The theme for the new play centre was based around the world and different countries and was subsequently called ‘World of Play’. Along with the extension pdp also refurbished the existing entrance area.
