PDP architecture llp recently completed 5 affordable rent dwellings for Winchester City Council, comprising of 4no. 2 bed 4 person houses and 1no. 3 bed 6 person house.

This terrace comprising 5 two-storey houses largely occupies the footprint of previous derelict cottages on the site. The proposal takes advantage of its orientation with the terrace facing north, with southern gardens taking advantage of the sun path. The proposal complements the Knowle vernacular by use of building technique and materials. The render clads the first floor gable ends, whilst wrapping brick soldier course of the current derelict terrace of Park Cottages is present below the render, emphasizing the cottage look of the area. Catslide roofs with pitched fronts are typical to Dean Villas and Totsome Cottages, and this feature ties the proposal nicely to the location.

Due care was taken to ensure the site retained its woodland setting. By situating the new terrace on the footprint of the derelict cottages and refurbishing the existing access, the construction caused minimal impact on the surrounding woodland, and the maintenance of existing vegetation ensures a healthy relationship between the new development and existing ecology.
